Outdoor Storage Units For Hazardous Waste Containment Complying With 40 CFR 264.175

There are specific regulations which address the requirements for storage in hazardous waste containers. Then there are additional regulations for the safe storage of these containers until they are properly disposed of.

Storage containment areas are addressed in 40 CFR 264.175 and the requirements for the design of the area are very specific. The owner or operator must inspect these storage areas at least weekly. A written inspection schedule must be made and maintained. There must be records of the inspections as well as actions taken to correct any identified problems or malfunctions.

Immediate Action Must Be Taken If A Container Is:

  • Leaking
  • Corroded
  • Has severe rusting
  • Has a structural defect
  • The hazardous waste must be transferred to another container that is in good condition and meets all of the requirements for storing hazardous waste.

Availability Of Outdoor Storage Units

There are a variety of Drum and Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC) storage options available at companies like Spill 911. These Storage Units are large and have been designed to allow you to safely store hazardous materials outside. The size is determined by the number of drums or IBCs they will hold and there is a wide range of holding capacities. Compare these units:

IBC Hard Top 1 Unit

  • Has 8,500 lbs. Load Bearing Capacity
  • 360 Gallon Sump Capacity
  • Size is 64.5”L x 62”W x 96”H

With this type of unit, you can securely protect IBCs outside from weather and unauthorized access. This unit has a roll-top door on the top and swing-out doors on its lower portion to allow easy access to IBCs.

This unit can be moved with a forklift, has a lock, and resists most chemicals. It meets EPA Container Storage Regulations outlined in CFR 40 264.175 and helps you meet the new Stormwater Management regulations NPDES 40 CFR 122.26.

20 Drum Hard Top Plus

These much larger units have multiple “4 drum compartments” that provide flexibility for a broad range of operations. They are available in 8, 12, 16, and 20 drum models.
You can store chemicals or hazardous waste, and spill response supplies in different units. The internal walls and separate sumps keep the different chemicals and substances segregated.  The units are shipped to you partially assembled, which is a savings on freight costs.
