Prevent them from reaching rivers, streams, and other bodies of water by practicing stormwater management techniques. As pollutants can become part of runoff, add various guards for stormwater management, filters for erosion control, or drain plugs and seals to protect the environment.
Erosion is a significant problem for many coastlines and river banks. Reduce it and prevent pollutants from entering the water supply by practicing erosion control. As a form of stormwater management, erosion control involves filtering out sediment and silt through dewatering bags, pipe socks, and downspout guards.
Drains are another point that allows pollutants, silt, and sediment into the water supply. Especially as oils and chemicals are concerned, block them out from drains, grates, and manholes by adding plugs and seals over the openings. But if a chemical or oil does spill, contain it as quickly as possible with berms, which bond to a surface to prevent a liquid from spreading, or pop-up pools. In such instances, always have a container, such as a drum or IBC, to hold the spilled liquid after a cleanup.
Guards are a key aspect to stormwater management, and several locations are appropriate for them. No matter the size, such guards catch oil, silt, sediment, and other debris and let water pass through. Add basin, curb, drain, grate, gutter, and inlet guards to a worksite or coastal area to reduce significantly the amount of pollutants that could end up in the water supply.
Aside from acting solely as a filter, passive skimmers and self-bailers specifically remove oil from water – even the sheen. Passive skimmers, in particular, are made for basins and drains and, as a polymer, bond to oil and won’t absorb water.
